I Cannot Remember My Mother

I Cannot Remember My Mother

1. Introduction

"I Cannot Remember My Mother" is a deeply emotional, reflective poem by Rabindranath Tagore that explores a child's subconscious and sensory memories of a mother who has passed away. The poet cannot clearly recall his mother because he lost her at a very young age. However, her memory has not disappeared completely. It returns to him through little sensory experiences—a tune associated with her lullaby, the fragrance of shiuli flowers and the vast blue sky.

The poem beautifully suggests that love is deeper than memory. Even when a person cannot remember someone’s face or voice clearly, the emotional impression left by that person may remain forever. The poem presents the mother as a lasting presence in the child's world.

2. Themes

·         Eternal Motherly Love

The central theme is the everlasting love between a mother and her child. Although the speaker cannot remember his mother clearly, her love continues to live in his heart.

·         Mother’s Presence in Nature

Nature becomes a means through which the child experiences his mother's presence. The shiuli flowers, temple fragrance and blue sky remind him of her.

·         Love Beyond Physical Presence

The poem suggests that physical absence cannot destroy emotional bonds. The mother may not be physically present, but her influence remains alive in the child's world.

3. Summary

The poem begins with the speaker saying that he cannot remember his mother clearly. However, while playing with his toys, he sometimes feels that he hears the tune of a song that his mother used to hum while rocking his cradle. Though he cannot recall her face, the tune brings back a faint memory of her.

In the second part, the fragrance of shiuli flowers and scent of morning worship at the temple awaken memories of her. Thus, nature becomes a link between the child and his lost mother.

In the final part, the speaker looks at the distant blue sky and feels the presence of his mother. He imagines that her loving gaze is spread across the sky and that she is still watching over him.

The poem therefore presents a touching picture of a child who cannot remember his mother directly but continues to feel her presence through music, fragrance and nature. It conveys the beautiful message that true love never disappears; it remains alive in memories, feelings and the world around us.
