Introduction:

 

The poet Coates Kinney becomes nostalgic when he hears the pattering sound of rain on his house-roof. Lot many memories of past including memories of his mother make him emotional and thereby he expresses these feeling in verses.

 Theme:

 “Rain on the Roof” by Coates Kinney brings out the magical power of rain. The sound of the rain has the ability to revive the old past memories of the poet. When it is raining and making melodious sound, it is a moment to relish and enjoy the ambience while lying on the cosy bed. The poet finds comfort and his mind drifts into memories that come back to soothe him.

 Summary

 The poet expresses his different feelings while there is rain falling on his roof. He describes that the pattering sound of the rain drops has the power to uplift our mood and provides us an opportunity of enjoy these moments feeling a great bliss and pleasure while lying on the cosy bed. Rain also makes us nostalgic as it brings lots of imaginations and past memories into his mind. The rain refreshes the reminiscence of his mother as she very fondly regards the poets and his siblings.

 2. Onomatopoeia: The use of sound words to create a dramatic effect and auditory imagery.

     Patter’ is the use of sound word. It is the sound made by the rain drops falling on the roof top.

3.    Personification: Treating a non – living thing as a living being.

darkness has been personified when he says that it is sad.

 

4.     4.Transferred Epithet: The use of an adjective with a noun when it refers to another noun.

In ‘melancholy darkness’, the darkness is not melancholy, but it refers to the sad people
