Short Answer Type Questions

1. What is the main aim of any communication?

Ans. The main aim of any communication is to convey information and achieve a shared understanding between a sender and a receiver. This involves sharing information, expressing emotions, building relationships, and influencing others.

2. Enlist the factors that affect the perspectives in communication.

Ans. Factors such as, visual perception, language, environment, prejudice, culture, past experience, feeling etc. can affect the perspectives in communication.

3. How does stress and tiredness affect communication?

Ans. Stress and tiredness significantly impair communication by affecting both verbal and nonverbal aspects. Stress can lead to heightened emotions, making it difficult to articulate thoughts clearly or choose appropriate words. Tiredness can cause mental fog, reduced focus, and difficulty remembering details, further hindering communication.

4. Define visual perception.

Ans. Visual perception in communication refers to the process by which the brain interprets and makes sense of visual information, enabling effective communication through visual cues like images, symbols, and even facial expressions.

Long Answer Type Questions

1.       How is communication a dynamic and a continuous process? Explain with suitable examples.

Ans. Communication is dynamic because it changes according to the context, people involved, mode of communication, and feedback. Communication is a continuous process as it never stops. Even silence, facial expressions, or gestures are forms of communication. Example: In a classroom, a teacher may start a lecture formally, but if students seem confused, the teacher may shift to a more interactive style.

2. What do you understand by barriers to communication? What do they do and how they could be avoided?

Ans. Barriers to communication are the things or conditions that obstruct the communication. These barriers may interrupt or block the message. They may cause misinterpretation or lack of clarity. The barriers in communication can be avoided by taking various measures such as the communication should be done in a calm and quiet place, the speaker should have good knowledge of language and the listener should be in right mood and he/she has to be attentive while communication is made.

3. With the help of an example, discuss how past experiences affect our communication?

Ans. Past experiences shape how we send, receive, and interpret messages. They create beliefs, expectations, and emotional responses that influence communication, sometimes helping and sometimes causing misunderstandings. For example, if a person promised to help someone during a crisis but later broke that promise, the other person would lose trust. If the same person makes new promises or says something again, it is likely that no one will believe him.

4. Is it true that language also affects communication? Discuss with example.

Ans. Yes, it is true that language significantly affects our communication. Verbal communication is often the primary mode of interaction, and it is influenced by language in several ways. Grammatically incorrect sentences can distort the intended message, and the words we choose may carry different meanings. Additionally, local colloquialisms can impact understanding, as the message might be misinterpreted.

For example, if someone says, “I can draw a cart easily,” the word draw can have two meanings: to pull or to sketch. This ambiguity may confuse the listener.

Application Based Questions

1. Give an example of prejudice that is prevalent in 3. Will it be appropriate to conduct a seminar or our society and has largely influenced our choice/ thought process.

Ans. One of the prejudices that was prevalent in our society until the recent past was the belief that women were not strong enough to join the defense services. However, it has now been proven that they are equally capable and well-suited for roles in defense.

2.       Make a list of things that you will keep in mind while choosing a language for a conversation with a friend.

Ans. The things I will keep in mind while choosing a language for a conversation with my friends are as follows:

(a)    I will make sure that both of us know the language I choose for the conversation.

(b)   I will ensure that words which may create ambiguity for the listener are avoided.

3.       Will it be appropriate to conduct a seminar or a meeting in cafeteria? Why, or why not?

Ans. No, it would not be appropriate to conduct a seminar or meeting in a cafeteria, as cafeterias are not quiet places. The noise and disturbances can negatively impact communication.

4.       Imagine you have a Tamilian friend who does not understand Hindi. Which language would you use to communicate with him/her and why?
